Parish
Mag. Nov 1945: It is with great regret, however, that we have to report that
Mr and Mrs Douglas Castle have received official intimation through the
Admiralty of the death of their elder
son, Raymond D. Castle, in March last (22nd March1945) , while a prisoner of war in Japanese hands. He was an A.B. Seaman in H.M.S. Exeter when she was torpedoed
in the Pacific Ocean in March 1942.
It is particularly sad therefore that he did not survive another six
months to be restored to his family. Further Info: HMS Exeter was engagement
in the Battle of the Java Sea later in the month as the Allies attempted to
intercept several Imperial Japanese Navy invasion convoys. Exeter was
crippled early in the battle, and she did not play much of a role as she
withdrew. Two days later, she attempted to escape approaching Japanese
forces, but she was intercepted and sunk by Japanese ships at the beginning
of March in the Second Battle of the Java Sea.
Most of her crewmen survived the sinking and were rescued by the Japanese.
152 of them died during Japanese captivity. Her wreck was discovered in early
2007, and it was declared a war grave, but by 2016 her remains had been
destroyed by illegal salvagers. AMBON WAR CEMETERY - Most of the 800 British
casualties belonged to the Royal Navy and Royal Air Force; nearly all the
naval dead were originally buried at Makassar. The cemetery is laid out in a
series of terraces approached by short flights of steps on the central axis.
The Ambon Memorial, which is in the form of a shelter, stands on the first
terrace. |

Aug
1941 - The whole parish mourns the loss of Frederick Cork, who is the first
Elham man to be killed in the war. He
served in the Royal Navy in the last war, and though he afterwards left the
Service and took to farm work, he soon found the call of the Navy too strong
when the country needed his services again; for the call of the sea was in
his blood and many members of his family were sailors. Stoker LT/KX 109889,
H.M. (Drifter) Receptive. Died 3rd July 1941. Commemorated on the Lowestoft
Memorial, Suffolk. Panel reference 7. Column 1. Like a good sailor, he was
always cheery, and as he was engaged in Home waters he frequently had short
leave, when we used t see him in his navy blue and always exchanged a friendly
greeting. A good husband and
excellent father, he will be greatly missed in his home circle, to whom we
express our respectful sympathy, and especially to Mrs Cork, who for the
secnfd time is left a widow, having lost her first husband – who was a
soldier – in the last war. A Memorial Service was held for Frederick Cork on
Sunday, July 13th at the Church, when the British Legion were present on
parade and flowers were placed in
silence on the Village War Memorial.
May he rest in peace. |

It
is with genuine sorrow that we record the death of Edgar Verney, R.A. – elder
brother of our late Churchwarden who is now serving with the R.A.F. – at
Malta on 9th
January. He was a veteran of the late
war, and although for some years he had not lived at Elham, he is well
remembered here. He was un-married,
but we tender our deep sympathy to his widowed mother. R.I.P. Corporal 349802, Royal Air Force
(R.A.F). Died 3rd January 1942 aged 53 years. Son of Edgar F.R. and Harriet
Verney, of Redditch, Worcestershire. Buried Protestant Section (Men’s), Malta
(Capuccini) Naval Cemetery, Malta. Grave reference - Plot F. Joint Grave 74. |
